The Underpants Strikes Back

Carrie Underpants…er…Underwood is back with the video for her new single “Cowboy Casanova” and for the most part, this is a breath of fresh air from Country’s reigning pretty pretty princess. Just when I was starting to fear Carrie was really a fembot who’d cornered the market on crinoline and dress shorts, she seems to have stepped up with this one.

Let’s break it down, shall we?

Hot costumes? CHECK. – Yes I know there ARE shorts involved but considering they are worked into the grander scheme and everything else is completely over the top, I’ll let it pass. The costumes SCREAM “wild west madam in a bar room brawl” and I’d be lying if I said I didn’t covet one of them to wear for Halloween.

Great Song? CHECK – Yes Carrie can belt out a ballad but snoooooooze, so can a lot of people in Nashville. IMHO, Carrie’s greatest success come from her up tempo songs. Anyone who has seen Carrie jump on a cover of any hair metal song knows there is a little rocker inside her DYING to get out. Remember, even Barbie had a rock band (Barbie & The Rockers.)

Great Dancing? Welllll, can’t have everything. – I applaud the effort, I really do, and in all fairness choreographed numbers always seem a little out of place in the Country world but bless her heart, Carrie’s got the dance skills of Whitney Houston circa “How Will I Know”. Settle down out there, Reba can’t dance either and it’s worked out for her just fine!

Overall, I’m glad to see Underwood stretch the limits a little. I’ve already seen some fans grumbling about it, but folks, puppet isn’t a good look for anyone. Keep it up Carrie…I’m pulling for ya.
